A Winding Sheet of Linen: A community field to cloth project

Shroud - The flax used in this demonstration was grown on the campus of Warren Wilson College as a collaborative project with Celo, NC death midwife Katherine Savage, who will make her linen shroud from it. By documenting the process of creating a shroud from seed, she hopes to connect people’s views of death to the natural life cycles of the earth, and thereby help advance a heathy death culture. For more information about this project here.

Attendees will receive hands-on practice in the skills of breaking, scutching, and hackling flax, and take part in a discussion about the potential for creating a local linen infrastructure in our mountain region.

We welcome all who have interest in:

  • learning how to grow and process flax

  • advancing earth-honoring body disposition practices that incorporate locally-grown textiles

  • supporting a return to our local heritage of growing and using cloth-making plants

COVID-19 safety precautions and social distancing will be observed, including wearing masks, 6 feet of social distancing, and sanitizing flax stations between use. More info will be sent at registration. Space is limited.
